Thank you so much, Betty! I appreciate your response, and agree with you that whose who act out of unexamined superiority complexes are worse than those who are overtly racist. The psychological and emotional impact of white supremacy on white American communities has not been examined much, and we definitely have a long way to go in understanding social problems in these ways… It’s also interesting to think about white conscience, because it’s true that there must be some kind of guilty conscience associated with letting people do bad things to others without trying to stop it. I think empathy is lacking in many white communities because of inbreeding, but this is a very different conversation to have that I intend to write toward sometime soon. I’m not optimistic about the future, but hope that if nothing else this kind of writing will help people have some important and difficult conversations with each other. I haven’t seen Dancing With Wolves, but would like to see it after hearing about it from you! It sounds interesting and relevant to our current era in history (well, actually, many eras… it’s just much more obviously relevant now).
