I’m not referring to you as an individual, Sara; I am referring to the socialization processes that affect all white people and am describing the behaviors of white folks as a sociocultural group. You’ve provided further evidence to support my claim about the dominance/superiority complex we regularly perform by exempting yourself from claims that ultimately aren’t about you as an individual but as our social group in general. This is like me claiming that a forest is unhealthy because most of the trees in it are dying and you responding by pointing out an individual healthy tree and claiming that the forest is therefore not unhealthy because not every tree is dying. The fact that you have a person of color and a trans person in your family and wouldn’t mistreat others doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that it is mostly white folks who mistreat marginalized people. The ways you’ve misunderstood me helps me know how to express what I mean more clearly next time; white individualism is an effect of dominant group membership that intersects the dominance/superiority complex in ways that seem a lot like narcissism… anyway, I appreciate and thank you for your responses!
